Camera Check Out for This Weekend

I cannot have any substitute check out cameras to you today. I know that most of you wanted to check out a camera over the weekend.

Music Video or Short Film Project

YOU WILL BE SPENDING THE REST OF THE SEMESTER FOCUSING SOLELY ON COMPLETING YOUR MUSIC VIDEO OR SHORT FILM.
Your Music Video Project (2 minute minimum) AND your Short Film (2 minute minimum) must have your Raw Footage completed by Thursday, June 2nd.

For the Music Video or Short Film Assignment you have 6 requirements:

1. Theme/Narrative - Is it clearly presented.
2. Look/Exposure - Proper use of iris, white balance, shutter speed.
3. Framing - Shots are properly framed and use of different Camera Angles.
4. Lighting - You need to have at least 1 scene with a special lighting effect.
5. Composition in Editing - Edits that occur on the beat of the song with NO JUMP CUTS.
6. Length of Video- There is a 2 minute minimum for this project.

Today, you'll spend the rest of the class period Brainstorming your Theme or Visual Narrative. If you finish early, you can begin Storyboarding.
You will need to fill out one complete side of a Storyboard Template and have it checked off by the end of class Thursday, June 9th for Seniors, and the end of class on Tuesday, June 14th for all other classes.

Copy Files and Reading Assignment

You will need to log onto 'vidstore' and copy over some files that you will need for your next editing assignment, "The Green Ball Debacle". This will be an introduction to editing in Final Cut.

Brainstorming and Storyboarding

BRAINSTORMING

As you now are reaching the creativity phase of your first project, here is what you need to be accomplishing:

1. Ideas for your Movie Trailer - If anything has popped into your mind when considering your Movie Trailer, prepare to write it down immediately. Don't ever hesitate when working the creative process. Hesitation is your creativity's worst enemy. It creates doubt.

2. Write those ideas down on your "Brain Paper". It doesn't matter what comes to mind, just WRITE IT DOWN!!!!

• Use as much paper as you need, but you MUST fill out a MINIMUM of one side of blank white paper.

• Include WHO might star in your film. (Friends, family, drama students?

• WHERE you could film to establish the most realistic and convincing environment for each of your scenes.

• WHEN could you film? Weekends? After school? Lunch? STAR?

Your "Brain Paper" is due on Monday at the beginning of class.

STORYBOARDING

• Always remember that the storyboard is not the end product itself. Students should not waste time making the storyboard perfect. Stick figures, circles, boxes, and other substitutes for figures or objects are fine for storyboards.

• It is important to note also that everything should be done in pencil for ease of editing the storyboard.

• Every scene contained in the storyboard should somehow contribute to the message/purpose of the video. It the scene doesn’t contribute anything, omit it.

• Storyboards depict major scenes. They are not a frame-by-frame recreation of the videotape.

Give Your Shot Selection Purpose

• Close-ups used to show details, expressions/emotions

• Medium shots usually involve one or two people at fairly close range; used to show interaction

• Long shots are used to set the scene and let the audience know where the action is taking place

Underneath each "Shot Square" on your Storyboard indicate what type of camera framing or angle might be best. Then, very briefly describe what is happening, and/or who is talking.

Your Storyboard is due by the end of class on Tuesday.

The Movie Trailer Project

Come up with a movie trailer for your fake movie. Spoof a famous movie you like or just invent a totally radical new idea for a movie. Make sure that the narrative of your fake movie is clearly conveyed in your movie trailer. There should be NO resolution to your conflict in your movie trailer, so do not add an ending. When was the last time you saw a movie trailer that gave away the ending? Make your fake movie trailer engaging by using quick cuts and a variety of different types of shots.

The Raw Footage for your Movie Trailer is due on Tuesday, April 12th.
Your completed project, edited and in the can, is due by the end of class on Tuesday May 3rd.

REMEMBER - YOUR MOVIE TRAILER MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
1. IT MUST BE BETWEEN 1 AND A HALF TO 2 AND A HALF MINUTES LONG.
2. IT MUST HAVE A VOICE-OVER, OR NAT SOUND BITES.
3. IT MUST HAVE A SOUNDTRACK. (IF YOU COMPOSE YOUR OWN EFFECTIVE SOUNDTRACK YOU WILL GET 10% EXTRA CREDIT)
4. YOUR MOVIE TRAILER MUST BE EFFECTIVE IN ALL AREAS, INCLUDING COMPOSITION, CONTINUITY, CAMERA FRAMING, AND ENGAGING THE AUDIENCE WITH IT'S CONTENT.
5. YOUR MOVIE TRAILER MUST HAVE A CLEAR VISUAL NARRATIVE WITHOUT A RESOLUTION.

"I Found a Frisbee" Editing Assignment

Your task today is to watch my edited Quicktime version of "I FOUND A FRISBEE". Once you've watched this, keep it open.
Now open up the iMovie Project File.
All of the clips you need are in the 'Clips' bin of your iMovie software. Arrange these clips in your iMovie timeline to look EXACTLY like my edited version. Make sure all of your cuts from one shot to the next happen at the same time and at the same place as my edited version.
There are a few clips that need have the 'Speed' changed to 'Slower' or 'Faster'. There's also one clip that needs to be reversed.
Your assignment today is to begin to edit your version to look just like mine.
If you have not already copied the "I FOUND A FRISBEE" folder on your Desktop, here's what to do:

1. Go to 'Go', 'Connect to Server'
2. Type in 'vidstore' and click 'OK'
3. The Name is 'swvid1'
4. The Password is 'vidwood1'
5. Choose 'SW Video Classes'
6. Choose 'Video Production Folder 1'
7. You will see the "I FOUND A FRISBEE" Folder. Drag the WHOLE FOLDER over to your desktop.

REMEMBER: You are going to edit your iMovie project to look exactly like my edited Quicktime version.

Students will not have access to cameras and camera equipment until the Lab Fee, Academic Plan, Out of Class Permission,Camera Check Out Permission, and Movie Viewing Permission forms are signed and returned.
